Things I Knew Sooner About Divorce: My Journey and the Lessons Learned After Divorce

Let me share a bit of my story. I’m in my late 40s, a British Bangladeshi, single parent and a mum to three teenage boys. My own divorce was a journey packed with unexpected lessons. As a Muslim woman in a British Asian community, I was terrified that divorce would strip away everything I held dear. However, it didn’t destroy my reputation or social standing. Instead, it challenged the stigmas often associated with divorce in our community.

This transformation wasn’t easy. Initially, my ex-husband and I could barely be in the same room without the air turning tense. But with time, a lot of healing, and the right support—including a spiritual healer and a circle of steadfast friends and family—we managed to evolve our relationship from one of conflict to cooperation. This shift was not just crucial for our own peace, but for effectively co-parenting our sons and supporting each other in new, meaningful ways.

These experiences didn’t just change my family life; they transformed me personally and professionally. I rediscovered my self-worth, reclaimed my identity, and eventually shifted my career from primary education to becoming one of the UK’s first Divorce Doulas. Now, I’m devoted to helping others navigate their own paths through the grief and growth that come with divorce, aiming to redefine its narrative.

Here are three key things I wish I had known about divorce:

1. The Power of Support Networks
  • Understanding the importance of a carefully selected support network – I like to call it ‘my cherry picked community!’ is a game changer. Family, friends, and professionals like therapists or divorce coaches
  • (who have been through a divorce – I cannot tell you how crucial this is) can provide invaluable support and guidance. It’s important to recognise that reaching out for help isn’t a sign of weakness but a step towards rebuilding a stronger foundation for now the future
2. The Potential for Positive Transformation in Relationships

It might seem counterintuitive, but divorce can lead to a positive transformation in the relationship with your ex-partner. Initially, it may be difficult to imagine any form of amicable relationship, especially amid conflict. However, with time, learning good communication skills, investing in healing the relationship between you and yourSELF, and sometimes mediation, it’s possible to establish an amicable and even supportive relationship. This shift from acrimony to a constructive partnership is crucial for effective co-parenting.

3. Self-Discovery and Growth Are Part of the Journey

Divorce is often portrayed primarily as an end, a breakdown of something that once held promise. However, it’s equally a beginning, an opportunity for profound personal growth and self-discovery. The challenges of divorce can lead you to reconnect with your personal values, rediscover your self-worth, and renewed purpose which can take you on to new, exciting paths —like a new career or passion—that might not have been explored otherwise. This aspect of divorce can be incredibly empowering, showing that it can indeed be a launchpad for a fulfilling and thriving life post-divorce.

If you find yourself navigating the challenging waters of divorce, remember, you are not alone. Transformation is possible, and there is a path to peace and empowerment. I’m here to guide you through it with my unique blend of emotional healing, practical advice and spiritual growth.
